About Bassano Marsh National Wildlife Area

Bassano Marsh National Wildlife Area is a significant wetland ecosystem located in the prairie region of southeastern Alberta, approximately 4 kilometers northwest of the town of Bassano. Covering over 2,200 acres, it serves as an essential sanctuary for a wide variety of migratory birds and waterfowl throughout the year. This marsh is a natural depression that retains water, creating a complex of marsh, wet meadow, and grassland habitats. These environments support not only numerous bird species—such as sandhill cranes, mallards, Canada geese, and numerous shorebirds—but also mammals like deer and small rodents. Established in 1987, the area is managed by Environment and Climate Change Canada with a primary focus on wildlife conservation and habitat restoration. Visitors to the Bassano Marsh National Wildlife Area can enjoy birdwatching and nature photography, especially during migration seasons in spring and fall when the diversity of waterfowl peaks. The flat prairie landscape provides good access points for wildlife observation and offers a peaceful experience in the open air. While there are no developed trails or campgrounds inside the protected zone itself, nearby facilities in the town of Bassano provide access for enthusiasts and researchers. This area is particularly important within Alberta’s network of protected wetlands and serves as a critical breeding ground as well as a seasonal stopover for migratory birds traveling along the Central Flyway. The Bassano Marsh NWA represents a vital refuge in an otherwise agricultural landscape, highlighting the province’s commitment to maintaining biodiversity and natural wetland ecosystems.
